Prevention is key!!!
With back to school season well under way, and with your little ones exploring and making new friends, the spread of head lice is higher. So lets talk about head lice. Now its a subject no one wants to discuss but if you have kids of school age it is something every parent has to deal with at some stage. As haircare professionals we will always discuss ways to help you prevent your kids or yourself from getting lice all you need to do is ask.
Head lice are tiny insects that live in hair. Nits are the empty egg cases attached to hair that head lice hatch from.
Head lice are a common problem, particularly in school children aged 4 to 11.
They’re largely harmless, but can live in the hair for a long time if not treated and can be irritating and frustrating to deal with.
Here at Seat Taaffe we want to help you keep them out of heads and out of the house!!
Here are some of our tips and tricks on prevention!!!
SIGNS OF HEAD LICE
Head lice can be difficult to spot, even when the head is closely inspected.
They’re very small whitish or grey-brown insects that range from the size of a pinhead to the size of a sesame seed.
Less reliable signs of head lice include:
- small white eggs or nits (egg cases) in the hair behind the ears or at the back of the neck
- an itchy scalp
- a rash on the back of the neck
- feeling as though something is moving in the hair
How to get rid of head lice
Treat head lice as soon as you spot them. You can treat head lice without seeing a GP.
You should check everyone in the house and start treating anyone who has head lice on the same day.
Lice can be removed by wet combing.
You can buy a special fine-toothed comb (detection comb) online or from pharmacies to remove head lice.
Follow these 3 easy steps:
- Wash hair
- Apply lots of conditioner (any conditioner will do)
- Comb the whole head of hair, from the roots to the ends
It usually takes about 10 minutes to comb short hair, and 20 to 30 minutes for long, frizzy or curly hair.
Do wet combing on days 1, 5, 9 and 13 to catch any newly hatched head lice. Check again that everyone’s hair is free of lice on day 17.
