How to Protect Your Hair from the Cold & Winter Weather

Winter can be tough on your hair. Cold temperatures, wind, rain, indoor heating and regular use of heated styling tools can all leave your hair feeling drier, more brittle and prone to frizz and breakage.

Just as we change our skincare routine during the colder months, our hair often needs a little extra care and moisture too.

At Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty, we believe healthy-looking hair starts with the right professional advice and the right products for your individual hair type. Here are some of our favourite ways to keep your hair looking and feeling its best throughout the winter months.

1. Give Your Hair the Moisture It Needs

Cold weather can leave hair feeling dry and lacking in softness, so adding a good leave-in conditioner to your routine can make a noticeable difference.

One of our Sean Taaffe favourites is our Sean Taaffe Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner. This hydrating spray is particularly suited to thick, coarse or naturally curly hair and can be used daily to help leave the hair feeling smooth and hydrated.

Simply spray 3–4 times onto damp hair, comb through and leave in. It can also be used on dry hair when your lengths need an extra boost of moisture

For finer hair, our Sean Taaffe Light Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner provides lightweight hydration without weighing the hair down, making it particularly suitable for fine, vulnerable, bleached or colour-treated hair.

Salon tip: Not sure which one is right for your hair? Ask your Sean Taaffe stylist. The best moisture routine will depend on your hair’s texture, condition and colour history.

2. Don’t Skip Your Weekly Hair Treatment

If your hair is feeling particularly dry or damaged during winter, introduce a more intensive treatment into your weekly routine.

The Joico K-Pak Intense Hydrator is designed to provide intense hydration to dry and damaged hair, helping to improve manageability, elasticity and shine. It is particularly useful for hair affected by bleaching, chemical treatments, heat styling and environmental factors.

Think of it as giving your hair a little extra care when your normal conditioner just isn’t enough.

3. Protect Your Hair from Heat

Winter often means more blow-drying and heat styling. With wet weather outside and less time to let hair dry naturally, it’s tempting to reach straight for the hairdryer or styling tools.

Always use a suitable heat protectant before styling.

Joico Heat Hero Glossing Thermal Protector provides thermal protection up to 230°C while helping to boost shine and reduce the appearance of split ends.

Apply your heat protection before using your hot tools and remember that the temperature of your styling tools matters too. Higher temperatures aren’t necessarily better for achieving your desired style.

4. Look After Your Hair When You’re Out in the Elements

Wind, rain and changes in temperature can leave hair feeling rough, tangled and frizzy.

Try to avoid heading outside with soaking-wet hair where possible, and protect your hair from the elements with a coat, hood or scarf. Be mindful of rough fabrics rubbing against your hair too, particularly if your hair is already dry or fragile.

For additional protection, Joico Defy Damage Protective Shield provides daily protection against heat, UV and environmental exposure while helping to maintain moisture and protect against colour fade. (Sean Taaffe)

5. Don’t Overwash Your Hair

It’s easy to fall into the habit of washing your hair more frequently during winter, particularly when you’re wearing hats or dealing with rain and humidity.

However, washing your hair too frequently with a shampoo that isn’t suited to your hair type can leave the hair feeling dry.

Choose a shampoo and conditioner based on what your hair actually needs. For example, Joico HydraSplash Hydrating Shampoo is designed for fine-to-medium dry hair and cleanses while helping to maintain moisture.

Your stylist can recommend the most suitable shampoo and conditioner for your hair’s texture, condition and colour.

6. Keep Up With Your Salon Appointments

Winter is also a great time to stay on top of your regular salon appointments.

Regular trims can help keep your ends looking healthy, while professional treatments can give your hair an extra boost of moisture and nourishment when it needs it most.

And if you’re thinking about changing your colour for the winter season, your stylist can help you choose a colour and maintenance routine that works for your hair.
